Having a business plan is not something that is at the top of our list as business owners during the festive season. When December comes, we all enter some sort of a frantic phase. Christmas is coming, and there are so many things to sort out before the year ends. Especially this year which has been a total wreck. In most businesses, things can get pretty hectic during the Christmas season. And before you know it, the year is over, and you have already made a different business plan for the upcoming year. Will it work?
Now, even more than ever, it’s time for new ideas, new chapters, a new you in the New year. Among all New Year’s resolutions (and there will be many), there has to be one that we all stick to and make sure it happens. Or is that just me? But unlike last year when you looked for ideas from friends and family, maybe this time around, you need to ask for advice from your fellow business owners. Did their business plan work this year?
Don’t worry if you forgot to summarise and build a new strategy. Go ahead and do it now!
You may be thinking of changing your pricing. This is something that lots of business owners find difficult. The New Year is a great time to introduce new prices to your business products or services. Have a read of Kirsty’s blog

Here are a few tips on how to improve your business plan for next year.
Sit Down And Do a Recap
Some of your fellow business owners may have already jumped into work and are not making any changes because their strategy for this year worked alright. And that is fine. Let them. But the best way to jump into the New Year is to sit down and plan. You may have come up with crazy ideas, but you know they need a lot of work, planning, and time. So, do a recap on how things went this year and start from there. This will help you set a foundation and develop a more effective strategy for the upcoming year.
Start Analysing And Stop Guessing
The start of the New Year is most definitely the best time to analyse and evaluate your business plan. This way, you know exactly what you should be aiming for in the next 12 months. Proper planning and analytics will improve efficiency much better than relying on experience only. Most companies nowadays use predictive analytics that analyse data. This data is essential for business growth, especially for B2B marketing organisations. This is well worth trying, even though you may feel sceptical about it.
What Are Your Goals for your Business Plan in the New Year?
Take time to sit down and take a hard look at how things went last year and what you want from your business this year.
- What goals did you set out, and did you achieve them?
- If you didn’t, why didn’t you?
- What can you do to reach the goals you missed and the new ones you set out for yourself and your business?
“True success is all about working towards meaningful goals and dreams. A goal is not always meant to be reached; it often serves simply as something to aim at”.
Bruce Lee
Setting goals is important for anything in life and essential in making a business profitable.
What Are Your Fellow Business Owners Doing?
Don’t be afraid to talk to your fellow business owners about what they have done and plan on doing. A lot of good ideas can come from putting your collective heads together. Reach out to them individually over the phone or video chat over a coffee. Two heads are always better than one, so set up a conference video call and share ideas with likeminded business owners. It doesn’t have to be people in the same line of work, sometimes it’s better to have a completely different perspective from a business owner who you wouldn’t necessarily have thought of. Working together with the businesses in your neighbourhood can benefit everyone’s business.
This will give you, and them, the opportunity to talk about what did and didn’t work the previous year and how you can improve in the year to come. Come up with new ideas and look at what is trending so you can capitalise on it.
Talking to your fellow business owners can be more beneficial than talking to your friends and family because they will not sugar-coat their thoughts and feelings. They may also have similar goals and ideas to you but perhaps a different way of achieving them.
You may also be trying to work out ways of reducing overheads if your business has taken a hit. One of the things this year has taught us is that it is possible to work from home. Lots of businesses are now moving to more flexible working for their staff. Have a read of our blog
“Is Working from Home Overrated?”
So, there they are. These are very simple but effective ways to improve your business plan for the New Year. Start completing them one by one, and you will notice a significant difference when you set realistic goals.
