Travel has always been something that fascinates me. I was lucky enough to take a gap year and I still have a huge sense of wanderlust. With the current restrictions, it is certainly hard to do at the moment. Not to mention the balancing act of whether we should or not.

Whilst COVID has increased the number of remote workers it certainly isn’t something new. Long before COVID was here there was, and still is, digital nomads. To those of you who don’t know what a digital nomad is it’s someone that can work anywhere in the world. All they need is a laptop and a secure WIFI connection.
Digital Nomads are a talented bunch of people spread all over the world. Their skillset is enormous and we have had the pleasure of working with some amazing digital nomads. But what impact does working with digital nomads have on your business? Are you confident that all the right steps have been put in place to protect not only your data but your client’s data? Consider your Data Protection Obligations
Regardless of where you, or someone you are working with, is in the world, you will have data protection obligations. If data is being transmitted back and forth between various countries you need to ensure data is protected. Recent changes, like for example European Courts finding that the US Privacy Shield is invalid, means you have to carefully consider your obligations. Data Protection and GDPR isn’t something you can just tick a box and hey presto you’re compliant. It is important you understand your obligations along with what you can and cannot do.

Is being a Digital Nomad something you aspire to?
We quite often hear a lot of people say their ultimate goal is to build a business and be able to step away from it and let it run itself. In light of COVID travel and tourism has taken a hit. It really isn’t a surprise as people become nervous to travel. But what about if you could work remotely. Would that help in your work-life balance?
Well, we think Bermuda is onto something. As you probably know Bermuda relies heavily on tourism to support their economy. How have they responded to this challenge? Well, they have introduced the Work from Bermuda programme. This programme allows Applicants to work remotely from Bermuda for up to 12 months. Can you imagine working from such a beautiful setting? If you decide to take them up on this offer you would become a digital nomad.
It isn’t just Bermuda. Our research shows that countries such as Barbados, Georgia, Estonia, Czech Republic, Mexico and Portugal also have similar schemes.
Travel planning
Prior to COVID we helped a number of clients with travel planning. This was primarily for business, but also for pleasure. This has given us a great deal of experience but also enhanced our passion for all things travel.
It isn’t just travel planning. Sadly a lot of people have found themselves in difficult situations.
