Every businessman and businesswoman knows that in order to see their business succeed, they must have predefined goals. Without goals, your life and career don’t have any defined purpose, and all too often, you find yourself back to where you started, stuck in a status quo or even worse, fail.
Are you goal-driven? If you are, which method is working for you to achieve your goals?
You may have achieved some goals but failed to reach others. Can you identify the reason for failing to accomplish some of your goals?
Properly setting goals and achieving them is a learning process. Only when you know exactly what you want to achieve will you know where to direct your energy and focus.
That is why in this article, we cover the importance of goal setting for business, committing to the goals and seeing them accomplished.
SMART method of setting goals
You have probably heard of the SMART goal setting method. It was first mentioned in 1981, and it’s based on the assumption that achievable goals are:
- Specific – Clearly defined
- Measurable – Precise data
- Attainable – Achievable
- Realistic – or Relevant
- Timely – Time defined
The SMART method may work for some people, but it may be utterly useless to others.
For a goal to be achieved, it’s not enough to be just specific, or just realistic, or just measurable and so on. It needs to be attractive to the person who is trying to achieve it!
Great achievements in history didn’t happen because their creators set SMART goals, but because they believed in their goals even when others said it was impossible.
The importance of goal setting for your business
In addition to helping us better organize our lives, setting goals in business allows us to see in advance whether a particular project will produce the desired result. It does not make much sense to start planning anything without a set goal since, in that case, we don’t know what we want to achieve with what we have planned.
With goals, we express the desired state, and they arise from the mission and vision of the organization. Goal setting is not only for your mindset but also to accomplish your achievements. Here are some of the reasons why goal setting is important for your business:
- Goals keep you motivated no matter how many times you fail
- Goals keep you accountable
- Goals give you direction
- Goals help you figure out what you want in life
Compare your goals and assess whether they are worth the effort required to achieve them
For every action, there is always a stake that does not have to involve money. For instance, there may be a “price” that can be in the form of other opportunities that you will miss or something that you will give up to achieve your goal.
Therefore, it is essential that when you set your goal, evaluate all the “costs” involved and assess whether the benefit you get from achieving the goal will be far more valuable than the investment you are investing in.
Always ask yourself what are the “costs” of achieving the goal, and are you ready to pay that price?
Set specific goals
The goals you are going to set should be specific, clear, and well defined, otherwise you will be looking at a failure. That means “making money” is an overall useless goal. Instead, what you need to set is something like “learn how to manage my time better by taking up this course,” “participate in all networking events to expand my network,” and so on.
Be specific and make an action plan. Setting specific goals will help you stay focused and stick to a clear plan. For instance, “I need to lose weight, will not help you lose the weight you want, but “Going for 30 minutes walks or jogs each day” may. You are making the end result clear by using specific stepping stones.
Commit to your goals
Before any goal can become successful, you need to take the first step. Carefully identify what exactly that first step is and what you need to do to make it. Make a detailed plan of what, how, where and write it down. Commit to commitment – do not procrastinate. Everything you can do today, do it!
Stay motivated to ensure you see your goals through to the end. If you don’t commit to your goal with everything you have, you are less likely to achieve it.
Set a deadline. If you don’t, your goal will fail
It’s very important to set a deadline and give context to the desired goal.
- Where do you want this outcome to happen? It can be geographically defined e.g. within a radius of 30km from your residence, or it may be a specific type at a meeting in the office.
- When do you want it to happen? Setting a time frame for a goal, that is, when you want your goal to be achieved, will increase your focus and help you in the planning process.
- Who do you want to achieve the goal with? It helps to identify all the participants who may be involved in achieving your goal. Whether it’s a colleague, friend or family, it’s important to know what exactly you need from them.
Don’t forget to reward yourself when you have achieved your goal
Whether it’s a big or small accomplishment, rewarding yourself in whatever way you can, can go a long way. This can be anything from watching your favourite show to going to your favourite bar or skydiving. There is nothing quite like setting a goal, sticking to it through thick and thin and seeing it happen!
By rewarding yourself every time you have reached an important milestone, you are creating a precedent, and it will help you keep motivated every time you feel tired or down. And that is not all! Not only will it increase your motivation even more, but it may help you increase the chances to turn the method you are using into a habit.
