In this modern era of technology, outsourcing for your business has never been easier, especially if you are a start-up.  Besides taking a lot of weight off your shoulders, you have more time to concentrate on the things you love doing and be more productive when you outsource tasks.

Leaving the job to someone with expertise in the field doesn’t mean you can’t do the job yourself. It means that you finally have the time to concentrate on the side of the business that you and your employees are good at. This in turn can mean a more efficient and profitable business, the reason why so many companies are outsourcing.

Advantages of outsourcing

  • Better working environment– When you outsource for your business, it creates a more relaxed working environment and better performance, for you, the entire company and all staff involved.
  • Low cost– Some companies don’t want to rely on outsourcing because they worry it will negatively affect the local economy. In some ways, this can be true because if you hire third parties there will be fewer people employed locally. However, the bigger picture is that since outsourcing is a cost-cutting measure, the profit companies make is higher. And that translates into affordable prices for consumers, which is a perfect recipe for a higher standard of living. So once your business realises how vital outsourcing is, you too will never go back to managing some tasks in-house.
  • Increased efficiency– Another advantage of outsourcing is efficiency. Having an expert in your corner to do specialist areas helps you stay sane and gives you the assurance that it’s carried out by a professional. Many of our clients come to us when they struggle with the idea of outsourcing elements of their business. Kate explains more about outsourcing in the blog How-to-effectively-outsource. What about delegation?

Running a successful business requires knowing when is the right time to delegate and outsource tasks.

When you hire people to do a particular job you have to put your trust in them. Trusting your employees to do their job the best they can, will help reduce your stress and promote a healthier working relationship that many appreciate. Being productive at work won’t happen when someone is breathing down your neck the entire workday.

“It doesn’t make sense to hire smart people and tell them what to do. We hire smart people so they can tell us what to do.” – Steve Jobs

Micromanagement

If you are a delegate, how do you handle day-to-day tasks and staff? Do you micro-manage?

You may think you have everything under control, but you simply cannot be a master of everything and micromanaging will not help improve the situation either.

Micromanagement is known to have a negative impact on employees in terms of stress, productivity and performance. This affects you and the business directly. This is why learning to properly delegate is so very important. Delegating a task does not mean handing it off to someone and forgetting about it. You still need to manage (not micromanage) your team to ensure everything is being done correctly.

Another advantage of delegating tasks is that it allows your employees to grow in their confidence and skills. Skilled and competent personnel can only make your business stronger and more profitable.

Balancing work and life

“You will never feel truly satisfied by work until you are satisfied by life”. -Heather Shuck

And this is why it is very important to have a balance between work and life, not only for your wellbeing, but for the health and strength of your business, and delegating will aid with that.

We often bring our work at home and feel responsible for every aspect of the business. Delegating certain tasks to your staff, and trusting they will do a good job, means you can relax a little bit.

Start-ups and delegation

We know that it may be hard to delegate when you first start out, because you want to be the one to do everything. And that is literally everything, from being the janitor to the CEO. But there are so many things that only an CEO can do and need your attention. Everything else can be delegated. So start small, test the waters. Start with delegating little tasks and projects and see how you feel about letting someone else do the job for you.

Find the right people

Last but not least is the importance of finding the right people to work with and they will add value to no end. Learn who you work with and get to know your employees better. This way it will be much easier to know who to delegate certain tasks to.

It’s also important to have a supporter of your business. Not just someone who puts money above everything else. This is when networking comes in handy. By business networking you can meet people who share the same vision and ideas like you. A lot of them could help support your business, both morally and financially.
